New Zealand Origin
New Zealand's unique geography and biodiversity create conditions that support Leptospermum scoparium — the mānuka plant native to New Zealand — which produces nectar with documented bioactive properties. Mānuka nectar is collected by bees and converted into honey whose origin and quality are supported by independent UMF™ certification and batch-level testing records.
From plant to label
Four useful distinctions when reading about New Zealand mānuka honey. Follow the original sources, then check the label and records for your own jar.
Mānuka, also called kahikātoa, is Leptospermum scoparium. It grows widely across New Zealand. Botanical identity describes the plant; the country-of-origin statement on your jar describes the product’s origin.
Their similar names and appearance can cause confusion, but mānuka and kānuka are genetically distinct plants. The shared nickname “tea tree” does not make them interchangeable.
Monofloral describes honey predominantly derived from one plant species; multifloral describes multiple floral sources. These terms concern floral identity, not a UMF™ grade. Check the classification stated for the particular honey you are buying.
For New Zealand exports labelled mānuka, MPI’s definition uses five attributes: four nectar chemicals and one pollen DNA marker. UMF™ quality assurance builds on this identification framework. Floral identity and quality grading answer different questions.
